Report from the UKFPO meeting, Sept 2008 Print

Heres a brief summary from the UKFPO meeting that took place in September 2008.

  • All information will be on the Foundation Programme website in the applicants handbook from 13th Oct this year.
  • Application form:
    • scoring difference between quartiles has been reduced to 2 points
    • first question about academic achievements has been increased to 8 points
    • the two referees have to be consultants, GPs or associate specialists
    • allocation of foundation schools is via preference first, but within foundation schools most do it by score first, though some foundation schools, such as Northern ones, interview.
  • F2 year abroad: advisable to find out whether certain foundation schools already have links with hospitals in certain countries before you apply.
  • Competition ratios for 2007 and 2008 will appear in the Applicant Handbook from the 13th October 2008. Ratios will obviously vary year to year.
  • Quack - Foundation School Guide: an independent guide to ALL the UK's foundation schools - written by doctors working in each school. Osler has requested a number of copies - they will soon be found in the Osler Annexe (Blackwells), but it can also be found at http://www.doctors.net.uk/fsguide.
Good news: over 90% of students were allocated to their first choice foundation school and this has been the case for the last 2 years!!
